The New Facebook Homepage

Facebook Account

The New Facebook look is what everyone interested in Social Media is talking about.

If you ask me, it is definitely an upgrade, and, not that difficult to learn and get used to.

Trying to get out of Facebook is a bit challenging without seeing the Logout button. It is located within The Account Menu.  The new Facebook Account Menu contains links to important settings:

  • Edit Facebook Friends
  • Edit Facebook Account Settings
  • Edit Facebook Privacy Settings, and more.

The Facebook Top Menu (available on every page) presents icons for requests, messages, and notifications, letting you know what you need to pay attention to.

Top Facebook Menu and Search

The Search box is also on the top menu, as well as Home and Profile.

Facebook News Feed- Top News -Most Recent

Facebook News Feed- Top News -Most Recent

The Live feed has been replaced with Top News and Most Recent. I like that!  News Feed remains.

The Facebook Left Menu contains a link to your Facebook profile, your Facebook news feed, your Facebook messages, events, photos, friends, applications, ads and pages, groups, marketplace and chat options.

I particularly like the ability to access your fan page from your homepage!

You can chat with your Friends Online or go online, as well.

A nice testimonial

I’d like to share this nice testimonial with you. I am very blessed to work in a very rewarding field. Thank you all for making it worthwhile!

To Whom It May Concern:

Blogging/Social Media Student

It is my pleasure to write about Elayna Fernandez, who was my teacher in social media and blogging.  Before attending Elayna’s class, I was clueless about using FaceBook and Twitter.  During the course of the class I learned how to set up a Google blog, which I sorely wish I would have known about before working with WordPress.com. I also learned how to set up and incorporate FaceBook and Twitter into my real estate business.  By implementing what I have learned I have given my business more exposure and hopefully will make more money down the road because of the education Elayna gave me.  Elayna is a wonderful teacher.  Should you ever have an opportunity to take a class with her; grab it!

Cordially,

Lynn H. Wilber

Thank you, Lynn, for appreciating what I do!

Should you call yourself an Expert?

Yes! … and Nooooo!

What is an Expert?

Copy-pasted from TheFreeDictionary.com

ex·pert n. A person with a high degree of skill in or knowledge of a certain subject.

Read more at Wikipedia.

It’s really NOT like being a rocket scientist! It shouldn’t be that intimidating.

Are you an Expert?

Be honest!

  1. Are you more knowledgeable than many in your field?
  2. Do you have more experience than many in your field?
  3. Could many past and current clients attest of your skills?
  4. Do other professionals in your field refer to you?
  5. Have you “been there, done that”?
  6. Do you find yourself giving advice to others in your profession?
  7. Do you know your audience, market and market trends?
  8. Do you know the answer to most problems that may arise in your field?
  9. Are you innovative and resourceful?
  10. Do you have credentials and a proven track of success?
Are you an Expert?

Are you an Expert?

Well, I think you will find out that, like Seth Godin says: “Everyone is an expert about something” and that you ARE an Expert whether you market yourself as such or not.

Isn’t that bragging?

I’m sure you’ve seen under qualified competitors get the job you deserve because they were boastful and not afraid of “tooting their own horn”.  A little confidence goes a long way. When expressed, that is.  If you don’t list your credentials and highlight your experience, no one will ever know. Your customers can’t read minds!

And yes, your awards and designations do communicate how committed you are to your profession.

Does it make sense?

Branding yourself as an expert is kind of nice! People trust experts, listen to experts and follow their advice.  You create a name that sells for itself.

When does it work?

A brand is a promise and your prospects want to know that you are qualified to deliver what you promise.  The question is…What do you promise? This is the defining element.  This factor will determine why all the “bragging” will work for one and won’t for others. “It’s not what you can do, but how you can help them!”

It works when you establish how your competencies will work for your prospects and when you focus on benefits and not features.

It works when you tell them how your know-how will add value to their business, their lifestyle, their pocket…

It works when you translate everything into terms of “what this means to you is…”

Is it THAT simple?

‘Course not!  After communicating your proficiency, you have to actually deliver. Backing up perception with action is what really pays the bills.  It’s why you see many are number one on Google and number “where is their name?” on the sales reports. Poor follow up and poor performance.

Does it have to be “Expert”?

Some prefer “Leader” or “Specialist”. Some even call themselves “smart”.  Some are “the best” or have an “Ask (insert name)” website. The truth about the word Expert is that is derived from Latin that means “Experienced”.  You could have been the smartest in your class, gone to Medical School and specialized in a particular area…if you never practiced…would you be the Expert?

So…should I?

Yes! If you have what it takes and will continue to reinvent yourself to live up to the title.

No! If you are afraid you won’t be able to perform under Expert’s pressure.

But one thing I’m sure of, you should let your prospects (and even your competitors) know what you bring to the table and how your uniqueness works towards delivering your brand’s promise.  If you are not able to tell others how wonderful you are at what you do, then, who is?

Best,

Your Branding Expert

What business are you in?

Last January, I heard Scott Bedbury’s talk about his vision in creating the Starbucks brand: “We are not in the coffee business serving people; we’re in the people business serving coffee”.

From Starbucks.com

From Starbucks.com

I am a firm believer that if you create an experience around your charisma, personality and unique capabilities, you will be successful in any business, any market and any economy.

I always encourage my customers to brand themselves in a way that no matter what they decide to do (a.k.a. being in a brokerage firm vs. the other vs. opening their own), their customers will follow.  It’s called being in the people business!

What business are you in?

Are you in the business of a pleasant sensory experience? (If your office looks messy, your car smells ‘weird’, the restaurant you take them to lunch serves horrible food, or you say something inappropriate – according to their judgment anyway – the experience you provide could be at stake.

Are you in the business of delivering excellence? If you promise quality, you simply have to deliver quality.  Realtors take great pride in customers who buy “sight unseen”.  When a customer trusts you to that extent, you know you’re doing something.  Yes, YOU, it all comes down to you!

Are you in the business of improving yourself? Denial is a capital branding sin.  No brand is perfect!  However, those who are successful know to capitalize on their strengths and find the opportunity on their weaknesses.  Reinvent yourself constantly, learn, improve your strategy, and be consistent in what you’re doing well!

Are you in the business of providing benefits? Let’s say you’re selling a house and the main features are “spacious bedrooms, prestigious neighborhood and competitive price”.  What are the benefits?  Could they be comfort, safety, status?  Could it be that you’re saving them money through your unique ability to spot deals? Or most importantly, would this mean that one of their kids is finally getting their own room?  Acknowledging the real benefits will show you listen and you care! It’s the old “I don’t care how much you know until I know how much you care!”

What unique experience comes with your product or service?  I can’t wait to find out!

Constant Contact goes social

Constant Contact’s new features make it easier to build your list on Social Networks.

When you prepare your newsletter (which could be information on your products or services), Constant Contact allows you to archive it so it is available to you in the form of a URL (address on the World Wide Web people can go directly to view it).

So you can create a custom URL to advertise the items featured on your newsletter, while adding contacts to your database.

You can easily point that URL through domain forwarding to something you can remember better!

Through Constant Contact e-mail archiving, you extend the life of your communications and, by adding a Join My Mailing List box, you can grow your list, as well.

They have now also added a share button so you can make it easy for your customers to share your archived e-mails. The share button links to more than 20 social networking sites!  That’s what I’m talking about!

Share button for E-mail Archive Campaigns

An auto-responder to welcome your new sign-ups would be ideal and don’t forget to include “follow me” and “friend me” statements and on your newsletter content so people can connect with you on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks.

Now THIS is truly Constant Contact!

Call me on Google!

Google Voice - YaY!

Google Voice - YaY!

I finally got my invitation to register my new Google phone number! I choose my birthday on the digits (239-244-1216) – December 16th.

The Google voice system is yet another amazing free service by Google.

It offers a personal phone  number that rings all of your existing phones when people call.

All of your voicemail in one inbox with unlimited online storage and free voicemail transcripts sent to your phone and email.  I tried this and it works perfectly.

Low-priced international calling to over 200 countries and free SMS.  So I can now call all my family in the Dominican Republic for 0.9 cents a minute- YaY

Google Voice actually has a phone spam filter to say google-bye to unwanted callers.  I also had the system call me to record a name and greeting.  So cool!

You can customize your Google Voice experience by simply clicking on the Settings link at the top right of the page.

Put your best face forward!

ElaynaFernandez.com

ElaynaFernandez.com

Your homepage is the first page visitors will see what they visit your site.  You have approximately 10 seconds to make a favorable impression before they’re gone forever.

I often see homepages packed with too much information, busy designs, poor color coordination, and what is even worse: no call to action.

I usually refer to the homepage as a portal that guides visitors toward navigating your site.  It’s a trailer or teaser of what really is in store for them.  It should be interesting and enticing, not overwhelming!

So forget the birds and learn about the 20 “bees” of a homepage Designed 2 Impress:

1.       Be branded. Your corporate name, logo, tagline and corporate personality should be depicted explicitly.  Use your colors, your font and your tone!

2.      Be a solution. Specify what you bring to THEIR table.  How is your skill going to impact their lives in a positive way?  What are the benefits of hiring you?

3.      Be a tease. Your homepage should be just an overview of who you are and what you offer.  Add deep inviting links to the pages where you expand on this information.

4.      Be confident. I highly dislike “I hope…” and “I think…” statements.  Let your passion show, your personality shine and your expertise sell.  Sound like you mean it! (I know YOU will…, I guarantee YOU will…, I assure YOU will..)

5.      Be generous. Offer something free, give value and don’t ask anything in return – except their e-mail address, that is ;) .

6.      Be consistent. People love familiarity (and so do search engines).  Keep your navigation where it’s at and the look and feel in general intact.

7.      Be interesting. Present a tip of the month or a “holiday theme” from time to time and in a consistent way, to keep past visitors coming back.

8.      Be credible: Add your contact information from the get go.  Why hide it a click away?  Add a privacy policy and copyright information to your page footer.

9.      Be professional: Function is great, but beauty is important. An attractive, uncluttered design speaks for itself.

10.   Be googly: Adding keywords gives your visitors clues that they are on the right place and it also helps with search engine visibility…(you knew that!)

11.    Be mysterious: Finish a short paragraph with “Learn more…” so they can visit other pages within your site upon click.

12.   Be welcoming: But forget “welcome to my website”.  Make them feel at home (no pun):  “mi homepage es su homepage.  Make it all about them!

13.   Be short: I don’t mean 4’11 :)   but be sure to keep all critical information “above the fold” or in one screen shot, no scrolling necessary. Bulleted lists are brilliant!

14.   Be light: Your homepage should load fast, with no delays.

15.   Be visible: Drop down menus are often ineffective because your links are hiding. If they don’t mouse over it, forget it!

16.   Be graphic: A picture says a lot of words – not sure if it’s really 1,000 – a video says even more.  Adding a response-pulling graphic or video is a magnificent way to add drama to your homepage.

17.   Be educational: Give a tip, a curious fact, or something they can remember. It’s all about positioning and giving value.

18.   Be allover: Your homepage button should be visible and clickable back.  You should also link your logo to your homepage because your visitor will expect it to be that way.

19.   Be loved: Add a testimonial or two to let people know clients are happy with you.  Maybe this could be the video you’ll include and the dynamic content you’ll post.

20.  Be social: Add icons or text links to guide your visitors to your blog, Twitter profile, Facebook profile, Activerain Profile, YouTube Channel, etc.

As you can see, your store front plays a major role in your online presence success.  When you present a branded homepage that is clean, professional looking and easy to scan, your visitors will take the time to navigate through your site. They don’t call it the “index” page for nothing!

Follow these tips and have the best homepage ever!  Now, since though a search engine your visitors will enter your site from just about any page, why don’t you go ahead and apply some of these rules to all your pages?  There’s nothing like home sweet home!
